Apple II analog joystick sampling rate?

Does anyone know at what speed the Apple II analog joystick ports are sampled from analog to digital? What's the fastest speed that the joystick X/Y data can be read?

I have no idea but it occurs to me that it might work as an 8-bit PCM audio input, even though an Apple II has laughably little built-in memory to support such a job.

I suppose if the update speed is exceeded the same data will just be re-read repeatedly until it is finally updated by the ADC chip.

Appeal II uses ne558 as "AD". I would be surprised if it can handle more 100Hz.
